"Don't ask me, I don't know..."-Ozzy Osbourne (1980)

About the FlipSide Logo

This logo was designed for FlipSide by Derek Ventilato (yes, the same Derek that plays in the band... he's VERY talented).  It is based on the traditional Chinese symbol “taijitu”, or “yin and yang”.

Drawing from the different yet complimentary playing, singing, and performance styles exhibited by John and Derek, as well as taking into account their different musical backgrounds, Derek settled on modeling their logo after this instantly recognizable symbol after some weeks of research on the meaning of the original design.

As the taijitu is already used in a myriad of different ways for an equal number of things, it was apparent that modifications would need to be made.  Two sides, two opposing forces, two people… two guitars!  What seems at first to be so simple an idea was in fact a painful creative process that resulted in a short stack of crumpled paper and deleted drawing files.  The original design made use of two standard, center sound-hole guitars; this proof-of-concept drawing eventually led to the current design, which reflects Derek’s black Ovation (offset sound-hole design) and John’s red Ovation existing in the type of harmony that is intimated by the original taijitu design.

The text was designed from scratch in its current form, with part of the name “flipped” as an obvious play-on-words.

"There's more than one answer to these questions..."-Indigo Girls (1989)

If you've been to one of our shows, you'll know that we do a "musical trivia" challenge at some point during the evening; we ask you to answer a question about a song that we play, and we buy the first person with the correct answer their next "drink"...  provided, of course, that you are of legal drinking age, and the club hasn't already restricted your beverage intake (non-alcoholic beverages are also available, please see your participating bartender for more details).

With that in mind, this page will serve as a repository of some of that otherwise useless knowledge that we will sometimes draw (but not necessarily limit ourselves to) our trivia questions.  In other words, check this page often and you could very well have us buying your "drinks" at our shows!
